- Physical and mental fitness: Astronomy is a very interesting profession, but practicing it requires serious physical and mental effort. While practicing it, you might have to spend days, months, or even years in space, and it would be a disaster if an unfit person is sent on such a mission. So if you have some physical or mental challenges, you should try doing something about them, as soon as possible.
- Weight and height: To become an astronaut in India, you would also have to pass the weight and height requirements. But as of the time of writing this article, the Indian Space Research Organisation is yet to give detailed information about this.
- Education: Astronomy is a kind of job that demands educated people. And if you’re not, you would have to obtain at least, a BSc. in any of Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, or Biology. But while an undergraduate degree is mandatory, nothing stops you from also obtaining a postgraduate degree. In fact, people with postgraduate degrees, stand better chances of becoming astronauts.
- Mathematics: We already stated that a degree is required to become an astronaut. But regardless of what you study in school, it is very important you’re also good at mathematics. Even if you studied Biology, it is in your best interest to develop your mathematical skills. Astronomy is a kind of profession which requires a lot of mathematics, so we doubt you’d be able to avoid Mathematics.
- Team spirit: When practicing as an astronaut, you’d often be working in teams. In other words, it is very important to develop a team spirit. Without this, you’re very unlikely to make it far. And fortunately, it’s not so difficult to develop this spirit.
- Communication skill: Astronauts work in teams. And when working in teams, regardless of profession, it is very important the team members have very good communication skills. You have to be able to express yourself clearly. And to do so, you have to understand the English Language pretty well. If your English needs improvement, you can start working on it, right from now. Also understanding some Russian can be very helpful. Russia has one of the best programs in the world. And it is very possible you’d have to work with them at some point or the other. In other words, an understanding of the Russian Language can make things easier, when working with Russians.
- Indian citizen: To become one of India’s astronauts, it is very important for you to be a citizen of this country. If you live in India, but aren’t a citizen of this country, you don’t stand the chance of becoming one of Indian’s astronaut. In other words, this requirement is very important.

Steps Required To Become an Astronaut In India
When you meet up with all requirements, you don’t automatically become a professional astronaut. Rather, there are steps needed to be taken, to become a professional astronaut, and we’d be starting from the basics.
- Attend high school:For anyone longing to become an astronaut, the first step is to complete high school. Without completing high school, becoming an astronaut would be impossible. In other words, this step is very important. But since a very large percentage of Indians would have no problem completing high school, we assume this wouldn’t be a problem for you.
- Attend university:After completing high school, it is expected of you to study a course at a reputable university. And you are expected to study any of the following courses: Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, or Biology. Studying a course outside this list, might not be helpful.
- Obtain postgraduate degree:Obtaining a postgraduate degree is optional for anyone interested in becoming an astronaut. However, it is highly recommended, as having one can go a long way in helping you. Good enough, earning a postgraduate degree isn’t so difficult, so you should have little or no problem carrying out this step.
- Take the ISRO Exam:After you have completed the preceding steps, the next step would be to take the exam conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation. Passing it is very important. But if you don’t you can always retake it.
